Electricity Market Competition in NSW

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process since the late 1990s. The first step was to establish a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in a different state.

The next stage, which happened earlier in some states than others, was the splitting up of state owned monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to promote greater competition the market was separated into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors look after the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers are the ones who sell electricity to customers and are responsible for billing. Each state has between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The electricity market in NSW was fully deregulated on 1 July 2014 . This meant that customers could switch to a provider who offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is provided by three distributors

  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy distributes electricity country and regional NSW, and in southern regional QLD.
  • Endeavour Energy
Endeavour Energy supplies 2.4 million people with electricity in homes and businesses across the Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains and Sydney's Greater West.
  • Ausgrid
The Ausgrid network provides electricity to eastern, northern and inner metropolitan Sydney and north to Newcastle and the Hunter region.

Tips to lower electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here are a few easily implemented tips to reduce your usage of electricity

  • Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air getting in or getting out through gaps under doors and around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Avoid use of the clothes dryer. Instead, hang your clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Turn off appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear warmer clothing (warm socks, booties, jumper, beanie).
  • Use less lighting. Use natural light more often. Turn the lights off when you leave the room.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the house cool down, and then closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Prevent the hot sun from over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in the rooms where the sun shines in.
  • Close the doors to areas of the house that you don't use, so that you only heat or cool a smaller space.

FAQ about switching electricity and gas providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and decided that you want to switch electricity and gas providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new electricity and gas provider has to give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to change your mind and stay with your old energy provider.
No, definitely not! The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). The distributor will continue to supply the electricity and gas to your house when you switch to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity and gas bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity and gas directly from a distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, there won't be any interruption to your electricity and gas supply because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually within 24 hours. But the final switchover can't happen until your current provider has issued you a final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on how soon your next meter reading is. It could take up to three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we notify your current provider that you're moving to another provider. The actual change in providers won't happen immediately, though, because the old provider will need to read your meter one final time. and then issue you a final bill. Your new provider only starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that feeds the energy to your premises will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will, however, receive a commission from the new electricity and gas provider.
